2LE MARIAGE DE SES PARENTS, MICHEL CHAUVAIN ET ANNE ARCHAMBAULT, A ÉTÉ ANNULÉ POUR CAUSE DE BIGAMIE, L'ÉPOUX ÉTANT DÉJÀ MARIÉ EN FRANCE. DE CE FAIT, SA NAISSSANCE EST ILLÉGITIME
“In late 1650, the discovery that Michel Chauvin dit Ste-Suzanne, husband of Anne Archambault, was a bigamist scandalized the little community. Michel had married Louise Delisle in France about 1636 and his wife was very much alive when Michel married Anne Archambault in Québec in 1647. Anne’s marriage to Michel was annulled and their two children were considered to have been born out of wedlock. The Montréalers rallied to the support of the unfortunate Anne and Charlotte, her only surviving child. Charles-Joseph d’Ailleboust and Jeanne Mance served as the little girl’s godparents at her baptism on April 5, 1651.[ 128] Michel Chauvin was there for the event, but apparently left the colony shortly afterward to return to his wife in France.”
