Notes for Jeanne Loiselle
“Jeanne, daughter of Louis Loisel and Marguerite Charlot, was baptized on July 24, 1649. Jeanne would have the distinction of being the first child of French parents to be born at Ville-Marie and survive to adulthood.
There were ten children born at Ville-Marie between 1648 and 1650. Jeanne Loisel was the only one of these to survive. Infant mortality in the early years of the settlement was unusually high, even for the seventeenth century. Does it bespeak of the primitive living conditions of the Montréalers within the fort? Was it just an unfortunate coincidence? Parish records provide few clues.[ 123] Couples buried their children, tucked their sorrow in a corner of their hearts, and, of necessity, went on with their lives.”
