Four Goulet patriots have left their mark on the history of the Canadian West:
1) The Honorable Roger Goulet, born in 1834, godson and protege of Msgr Provencher, was a
French me’t1's who became a surveyor, a district judge and a member of the Assiniboin Council.
2) The Honorable Maxime Goulet, became a
representative of Saint-Vial to the Manitoba legislature on 18 December 1878, and then was appointed the minister
90 of agriculture.
3) From 1869 to 1870, the Lieutenant—General of the Provisional Government of Riviére—Rouge was named Georges Goulet.
4) The most famous of the Goulets from Rivie’re-Rouge was Elze'ar. He was part of the council of war which sentenced Thomas Scott in 1870. A completely honorable man, he was pursued just the same by the occupation army. "Having to go into the water to save his life, he was Wounded by a stone While he was swimming towards Saint-Boniface, and dazed by the blow, he drowned," on 13 September 1870. E1ze'ar was the brother of the Honorable Roger and the son of Alexis Goulet and of Josephte Siveright. All these Goulets are descended from the Canadian Voyageurs who went to the West during the time of La Verendrye.
In 1646, ancestor Jacques Goulet carried a flute in his pack. This musical instrument has been treasured by the family right up to today. It belonged to Alexis Goulet and Maxime Goulet, mentioned above. In 1934, Robert Goulet, from Winnipeg, artist and composer of the "Gigue de Ia R1'v1'e’re-Rouge," jealously guarded it. Before the first World War, the flute became silent when someone thought to hydrate it by passing it through steam. A miracle occurred when it made music again. And so it is like that in our history. In order to learn the lessons of history, one must study them with loving attention.
