Notes for Pierre Babin dit Lacroix
13Biography
Charles was the son of Madeleine Richaume Petrus and an unknown father. He was baptized on 27 Feb 1709 as Charles Richaume. [1]
Note re Pierre Babin (husband of Charles' mother):
Pierre Babin must have been an interesting character. He was born in 1663 in Poitiers, France in the parish of St-Didier (PRDH), and emigrated to New France. He was the head chef of Governor Frontenac, and was also an innkeeper. He married in 1691 to Madeleine Richaume in Montréal. Their first child was baptized in 1692 in Lachenaie, followed by five more children baptized between 1694-1701 in Quebec City. In an act of Notary Genaple of November 7, 1700, it was written that "the businesses of Mr. Babin and his wife oblige them to withdraw from this country to France". What sort of business could it have been? Perhaps he owned an inn or property of some sort back in France, which necessitated his removal. Apparently he left for France alone. Madeleine gave birth to a child in February 1701 in Quebec city. She moved to Boucherville after that date, with the four survivors of the six children produced by the marriage.
PRDH notes that there is no trace of this Pierre Babin anywhere in Quebec after that date. (Some sources give a death date of 1747 in Chambly, however that record is for a six year old child named Pierre Babin). PRDH states that he died "outside of Quebec", which means only that they did not determine a death within Quebec. Did he die on the voyage back to France? Did he remain in France, or suffer some sort of accident or illness while attending to his business there? Did he die on the return trip to Quebec? What became of him after his departure is unknown to the modern researcher. Many possibilities exist, but it appears his family must have given up hope for his return.
Madeleine Richaume gave birth to two children out of wedlock, in 1703 and in 1709. How difficult her life must have been, in the early 1700's, virtually or actually abandoned by her husband with four... now six... children to raise. She must have needed to use every resource available to her, merely to survive.
By 1735 there seems to have been some resolution of the matter of the marriage or of the life of Pierre Babin. Madeleine remarried in the church, and is listed as the widow of Pierre Babin on the marriage record. She must have been a formidable woman, to have lived such a life and still be of a status that a man would marry her at the age of 62! Madeleine lived eight more years after this marriage.
